So how is the Severn Bridge and Star Wars linked ? The following fascinating extract is taken from the International Movie DataBase:
"'The sounds of the lasers were made by striking one of the suspension wires of the original Severn Bridge. The longer ones were used for the ships while the shorter ones were used for the hand guns."

A recent revisit shows that IMDB no longer asserts this unlikely story, instead attributing the sound effect to the striking of a "pylon". The story may be an internet meme, as many other websites have repeated the claim but they never source it.
